Curriculum enhancement entails modifying components of the standard curriculum in order to increase the level of complexity and so adapt it to the development of a student with exceptional intellectual ability. It is not only a matter of eliminating a portion of the fundamental curriculum (if required), but also of designing new components to replace those lost and to provide a greater challenge for the gifted student.
Curriculum enhancement should follow the criteria of an increasing complexity of the curriculum. In this sense, it is possible to design either non-significant or significant adaptations for enhancement.
Non-significant adaptations only modify the non-regulatory elements of the curriculum, such as activities, methodologies and resources used, time planning, and even provide expanded content that provides a higher but graduated level of difficulty.
Significant curricular enhancements imply the vertical extension of the curriculum to be studied, as well as changes to the didactic programming, including the objectives and content of higher educational levels, the specific methodology to be used, the necessary organizational adjustments, and the specific definition of the evaluation criteria for the areas or subjects adapted.
