Supporting gifted children in the classroom can be challenging for educators who have limited experience of high-achieving learners. It can be difficult to find ways to engage and challenge these students so that they are able to meet their potential. There may be additional challenges in a mixed-ability classroom, in which educators must balance the needs of all of their students.
This course will introduce you to some of the skills related to teaching gifted students. It will make use of the content of earlier courses in this Learning Unit, and these topics will be explored in more depth in later Learning Units.
When you have finished this course, and the Learning Unit, you will:
- Understand how to develop learning designs so that gifted students are engaged and challenged.
- Be aware of the various ways in which gifted students relate to their world, in and out of the classroom.
- Understand that gifted students may underachieve in school, and that underachieving students may be gifted; and
- Understand that certain traits in gifted students may lead to unsuccessful and/or damaging educational experiences.
